Beavers pull away from Rebels

COLUMBIANA–Beaver Local used a second-half surge to turn back Crestview 76-48 on Friday in a boys basketball opener for both schools.

The Beavers opened up the second half with an 18-5 run that helped them secure the win.

“The way the last few years have gone its great to come out opening night and get the win,” Beaver Local coach Jason Pacanowski said. “Especially with a young team this is a great confidence booster for the team.”

Beaver Local only held a one point lead going into the half.

“We weren’t playing our style of basketball in the first half,” Pacanowski said. “We have got to pressure but be solid and we did that in the second half.”

The Beavers had 15 steals on the night.

“In the first half we were gambling a little too much that caused some easy buckets around the hoop but in the second half we got back our mental toughness and discipline,” Pacanowski said.

The leading scorer for the Beavers was Luke Chetock who finished with 21 points.

Beaver Local also saw solid outputs from Drew Theiss with 16 points and five assists as well as Zak Pappas with 12 points and four steals.

Josh Hilditch had 15 points and six rebounds for the Beavers.

“It’s an amazing feeling,” Theiss said. “We only have three letterman back this year and a lot of my teammates stepped up big tonight.”

This game also saw the Crestview coaching debut of Jeff Wilson.

“The first half went phenomenal,” Wilson said. “We went down 18-10 early and we came back to go into half down 31-30 with momentum.”

Crestview went on a 12-2 run to open the second quarter.

“The second half we lost the game by not containing the ball and not rebounding very well,” Wilson said. “We also weren’t patient with players getting to their spots.”

The Beavers outrebounded the Rebels 27-14 including 12-6 on the offensive boards.

For the Rebels, Drake Golden had 10 points and Hunter Woodring had seven points.

Jude Riffle also added seven points for Crestview.

Hunter Woodring had eight points for Crestview.

The Beavers are 1-0 on the season and will travel to Edison next Friday.

“We want to play to win this season,” Theiss said. “We have to come together and play defensively like this every night.”

Crestview starts the season 0-1 and will travel to Wellsville today.

In jayvee action Beaver Local won 51-39.

Leading the Beavers was Brian Cramer with eight points.

Josh Barr had eight points for the Rebels.
