Beavers roll over Tigers in opener
CALCUTTA–The Beaver Local girls basketball team opened up the season by putting the pressure on Wellsville in a 62-20 rout on Monday at Beaver Local High School.
“We rely on pressure defense leading us to score,” Beaver Local coach Stephanie Coie said. “We’ve been playing pressure defense like this for the past two years and the girls understand that it will help lead to scoring opportunities in transition.”
Beaver Local was led by Kierra Taylor who finished with 19 points including a 5 for 5 perfomance from the free throw line.
“It’s a great feeling,” Taylor said. “I think we have a great season ahead of us.”
The Beavers held the Tigers to nine first-half points.
“We played very well as a team,” Coie said. “I was very happy with our help side defense because we have been working on that in practice.”
Also in double figures for the Beavers were Jenna Riccardo with 11 points and Lexie Hilliard with 10 points.
“This team has the ability to do great things as long as we keep our focus,” Coie said. “If we can stay healthy and play as a team where everyone plays as a team knowing their role we can have a good season.”
