Steubenville heads back to state

ZANESVILLE — Seventh-ranked Steubenville earned a return trip trip to state with a 9-2 win over Athens in a Division II regional final Sunday at Gant Memorial Stadium.

The game was postponed due to weather Saturday.

Calvin Bickerstaff went the distance for Big Red, scattering seven hits with four strikeouts and one walk.

Big Red (28-4) will play Dayton Chaminade-Julienne (23-4) in the state semifinals at 4 p.m. Thursday at Huntington Park in Columbus. Steubenville defeated East Liverpool and Beaver Local in tournament play on the way to state.

Local officials at state track meet

COLUMBUS — Eleven officials of the Greater Youngstown Track Officials Assocation has been selected by the Ohio High School Athletic Association to work at the state track meet at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium on Friday and Saturday.

They include Andris Baltputnis, public address announcer; Peggy Celedonia, umpire; BJ Duckworth, pole vault; Jim Fox, referee; Joan Fox, umpire; Bob Hodgson, discus; Margie Iagulli, umpire; Ed Katzman, finish area coordinator; Karen Sapp, head long jump official; Tom Sapp, umpire; and Ron Weaver, umpire/crew chief.

Brownfield sixth at junior qualifier

ORRVILLE — Lisbon High School junior Branson Brownfield shot a 74 in rain-soaked conditions Saturday to finish sixth in a Northern Ohio PGA Qualifier at Riceland Golf Course. The top 10 finishers earns points towards invitation to the PGA Junior Championship to be held later in the summer.
