Potters defend championship

WHEELING, W.Va. — East Liverpool’s boys tennis team successfully defended its Ohio Valley Athletic Conference boys Class 1-4A title on Thursday at West Liberty University.

The Potters, who were the champions in Class 1-4A in 2016, collected eight points to edge second-place Steubenville who had seven points.

“I am a little bit shocked this year,” East Liverpool coach George Whittaker said. “We had a nice club last year but it took some luck this time. Montgomery got to the finals and a couple of others came through for us. We also had some nice draws.

“I am happy because we have everyone but one senior coming back next year, so hopefully we can go for a third. We have been competitive and have a lot of pride in our program.”

Chris Montgomery led the Potters as he made it to the first singles final, losing to University’s Drew Hawthorne, 8-0, in that match. Montgomery did knock off the top seed — Wheeling Central’s Giorgio Alexander — in the semifinal.

Alex Tambellini had two wins to aid the championship effort.

University won the Class 5A crown with 17 points and two champions.

East Liverpool is back in action Monday host Lordstown.
