Beavers earn three OVAC top seeds

WHEELING, W.Va. — For the first time in the 64 years of the OVAC Ron Mauck Wrestling Tournament, a significant change will take place as fans scan through their respective brackets.

Instead of seeding eight individuals in each of the 14 weight classes as has been done in the past, conference coaches and officials determined it was necessary to up that count to 12, with the 13th as alternate.

“The tournament committee meets with the coaches committee of representatives that they vote on and the last couple of years this was one of the things that kept being brought up,” tournament Director Dan Doyle explained. “This is an OVAC Tournament, so coaches brought that up and the committee looked at it. This year we put it into place and like I mentioned before, we’ll meet again in the springtime with them and evaluate things and see how it goes.”

Doyle said Sunday’s seeding meeting went great.

“We’re blessed in the fact that most of the conference coaches have a wrestling background and are knowledgeable of the wrestlers,” Doyle added. “When they sit down they know what they are doing it makes it go a lot quicker. Jim and John Rocchi really did a wonderful job handling that meeting.”

Perennial powerhouses Parkersburg South and Steubenville lead the way, as expected, with 13 seeds each. The Patriots have three No. 1 seeds in Luke Martin (126-pounds), T.J. Lambiotte (170) and Hunter DeLong (182), while Big Red has two in Timmy Young (113) and Jashon Hubbard (145). Martin, DeLong, Young and Hubbard are all defending champions, with DeLong seeking to become the eighth individual to win four titles.

The Patriots have won six overall titles in their seven years in the event. They are seeking a fourth consecutive crown.

Other No. 1 seeds include Beaver Local’s trio of Cole McComas (106), Quinton Bookman (132) and Beau Smith (152); Shadyside’s Greg Quinn (120); Oak Glen’s Robert Bozek (138); Wheeling Park’s John Nash (160); Martins Ferry’s Dalton Hoover (195); Magnolia’s Caleb Nice (220) and Linsly’s Gage Giovengo (285).

Quinn, Nash, Hoover and Nice are defending champions.

In addition to winning the overall title a year ago, Parkersburg South was also the Class 5A champ. Indian Creek took the Class 4A title, with Magnolia prevailing in Class 3A and Shadyside in 1A/2A.

The event begins Thursday at 6 p.m. with the Olympic-style opening ceremonies. Wrestling starts 30 minutes later.

Friday’s wrestling starts at noon with action on eight mats.

Saturday’s first session will begin at noon with action on four mats. The finals are set for 6:30 p.m. Saturday.

A single session is $6 for adults and $4 for students. Final session is $8 for adults and $5 for students.
