Pancake breakfast upcoming

EAST LIVERPOOL — The East Liverpool basketball program will host a pancake breakfast from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday at the L&B Donut Shop. Cost is $7.

Flag football coming soon

WEIRTON, W.Va. — The Tri-State All-Stars, a semiprofessional football team, will hold a 7-on-7 flag football charity fundraiser at noon Dec. 10 at Krazy Bout Sportz, 2850 Weir Ave., Weirton.

The event will feature two flag football games for two age divisions-5-9 and 10-13-played in eight-minute quarters. Trophies will be given to the winners.

Each participant is asked to bring a new toy. Registration is $10, and pre-registration is preferred. Pre-registrants will receive a T-shirt.

The fundraiser will benefit the Weirton Salvation Army. For more information, call 304-551-6573.

Lisbon freshmen fall

LISBON — The East Palestine freshmen boys basketball team squeaked by Lisbon 27-26 Thursday.

Dominick Cathers led the Bulldogs with 11 points. Dalton Vance had nine, and Nick Welch added seven.

For the Blue Devils, Davis recorded nine points, Fisher six and McCoy four.

Wilson commits to Wake Forest

COLUMBIANA — Columbiana’s Jared Wilson, the Division III state golf champion, made a verbal commitment earlier in the day to continue his golf and academic careers at NCAA Division I Wake Forest University.

More than 20 colleges were in close contact with Wilson. In addition to Wake Forest, He took visits to Kent State, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Vanderbilt.

The 16-year-old Wilson — Columbiana County’s only state golf champion — already has an impressive resume. He captured the Division III state golf title in September and set the tournament scoring record at NorthStar Club with a pair of 1-under-par 71s.

Wilson made his third straight state appearance after placing fifth as a sophomore and 11th as a freshman.

He was one of 12 high school boys named to the 2016 Transamerica Scholastic Junior All-America Team. He also has been the medalist at the Inter-Tri County League tournament the last three years and the Division III sectional and district tournaments the last three years.

Wake Forest is a private university in Winston-Salem, N.C., and competes in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Wake Forest men’s golf program has captured three national championships and produced notable players including Arnold Palmer (4 Masters, U.S. Open, 2 British Open), Curtis Strange (2 U.S. Open), Lanny Wadkins (PGA Championship), Darren Clarke (British Open) and Webb Simpson (U.S. Open).
