Lisbon’s inaugural tournament begins

LISBON–An event that Lisbon boys basketball coach Chris Huckshold hopes to make an annual tradition tips off today when the school hosts the inaugural Lisbon Tip-Off Classic.

The tournament begins at 6 p.m. tonight when Valley Christian takes on Sebring at Nace Gymnasium. Lisbon will then battle Heartland Chrsitian at 7:30 p.m. The action finishes on Saturday with the consolation game at 6 p.m. and the championship game at 7:30 p.m. Prior to that, the Heartland and Lisbon jayvee teams will play at 3 p.m., with the Sebring and Valley Christian jayvees squaring off at 4:15 p.m.

“Last year, me and our athletic director at the time Jake Walgate were looking at this season’s schedule and I mentioned that I’d really like to get a tip-off tournament going for the first weekend of the season,” Huckshold said. “Holiday tournaments and tip-off tournaments are big in Pennsylvania. With the way scheduling is going, I think you’re going to see more of it here in Ohio.”

Ticket prices are $6 for adults and $4 for students. Huckshold said each team will get fed and will also receive a tournament T-shirt. There will also be an all-tournament team named. The all-tournament team will be comprised of one player from each team in the consolation game, one player from the tournament runner-up, and two players from the tournament champion. There will also be a trophy presentation at the conclusion of each game Saturday.

“We are trying to make it something really special for the kids,” Huckshold said.

Huckshold said he hopes the idea will take root and become an annual tradition on the first weekend of the season.

“We hope to make this an annual event,” Huckshold said. “For me personally, I wanted to give a nice spotlight to basketball in the first weekend of the season. We have great facilities here and it will be nice to bring in some schools from outside the area and give them a nice couple of nights of basketball.”
