Basketball season opens Friday

The high school girls basketball season opens Friday night with four area games. Here is the area schedule on the opening weekend with the junior varsity starting times, which will be followed by the varsity games:

Friday, November 25

Lisbon at United, 6 p.m.

Columbiana at Western Reserve, 6 p.m.

East Palestine at Leetonia, 6 p.m.

Springfield at McDonald, 6 p.m.

Saturday, November 26

Fairless at Minerva, Noon

Ravenna at West Branch, 6 p.m.

Canfield at New Philadelphia, 6 p.m.

Jones heads to Oklahoma

GARRETTSVILLE  — Two-time Ohio Division II state discus champion Lauren Jones from Garfield High School will continue her track career at the University of Oklahoma.

Jones recently signed her letter of intent to join the Sooners after graduation. Jones set the school record in the discus with a toss of 160-feet-11 and also compete in the high jump, long jump and shot put.

She said her goal her senior season is to break the Division II discus state record of 170-feet-8.
