Mayfield, Adkins grace All-Ohio
COLUMBUS — Area football teams looked to their senior leaders when they needed a big play.
East Liverpool senior quarterback Austin Mayfield and West Branch senior offensive lineman Ian Sharp were named to the 2016 Associated Press Division IV All-Ohio second team announced Tuesday.
Salem senior receiver Jake Humeniuk and Beaver Local senior offensive lineman Terry Adkins gained third-team All-Ohio honors.
Mayfield threw for a single-season school-record 1,714 yards, completing 121 of 214 passes (57 percent) for 10 touchdowns with six interceptions. He also ran for 432 yards and nine touchdowns.
Sharp guided a West Branch offense that averaged 331 total yards a game, including 216 on the ground.
Humeniuk set all the school receiving records with 77 catches this season for 1,122 yards (14.6) and 12 touchdowns. He also has career records with 151 catches for 2,264 yards (15.0) and 27 touchdowns.
Adkins had a 87 percent blocking percentage and 35 pancake blocks.
Receiving special mention in Division IV were East Liverpool senior defensive lineman Freddie Plum and a trio of talented junior linebackers — Beaver Local’s Michael Clendenning, East Liverpool’s Michael Loy and West Branch’s Cole Pittman.
Plum finished with 75 tackles, including 21 for losses, eight sacks, two fumble recoveries and one interception.
Clendenning paced the Beavers’ defense with 89 tackles, including 15 tackles for losses and nine sacks. He added three fumbles recoveries, returning one 96 yards for a touchdown.
Loy totaled a single-season school-record 151 tackles, including eight tackles for losses and seven sacks.
Pittman topped the Warriors with 157 tackles, including 111 solos, and two sacks.
