John Carroll puts end to several streaks
ALLIANCE — Mount Union’s 112-game, NCAA record-setting winning streak is over.
Anthony Moeglin threw a 24-yard, go-ahead touchdown pass to William Woods with 39 seconds left, lifting John Carroll to a 31-28 win over the top-ranked Purple Raiders on Saturday.
The Division III powerhouse hadn’t lost since Oct. 22, 2005, when a setback to Ohio Northern ended a 110-game winning streak that also lasted longer than a decade.
John Carroll (9-1, 9-0 Ohio Athletic Conference) earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III playoffs by winning its first conference title since 1994. Moeglin threw three TD passes without an interception.
Mount Union (9-1, 8-1) will likely get one of six at-large bids to the playoffs and a chance to defend the school’s 12th national title.
The lead changed hands four times and three of those came in the final five minutes.
John Carroll scored twice in the first quarter to lead 13-0.
Mount Union freshman quarterback Dom Davis had a 25-yard touchdown run on fourth down with 38 seconds left in the first half to make it 13-7 at halftime.
The Raiders took the lead, 14-13, on the opening possession of the second half as Davis threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to Tim Kennedy.
Davis threw another TD pass later in the quarter – a 20-yarder to Justin Hill and Mount Union extended the lead to 21-13.
Ray Brewster intercepted a Davis pass at the John Carroll 3-yard line early in the fourth quarter and Blue Streaks went 76 yards capped by a 40-yard touchdown pass from Moeglin to Nico James to close to 21-19.
John Carroll retook the lead when Davis lost the ball on a sack by Reese Armstrong and Dylan Hall picked it up and ran 45 yards for a score as it was 25-21 with 5:13 to play.
Davis and the Raiders responded as he engineered a 70-yard drive that ended with a 37-yard touchdown pass to Braeden Friss that put Mount Union back up 28-25 with 3:30 left.
John Carroll got the ball back on its own 32-yard line and seven plays later on third and 12, Moeglin tossed the game-winning touchdown pass.
Moeglin was 18-of-33 for 239 yards with three touchdowns while Ro Golphin had 119 yards rushing including an 80-yard touchdown run to lead John Carroll.
