Four Potters, three Beavers, two teams, one result

Area Football players were well represented on the 2016 Associated Press All-East District football team released on Thursday. The team was selected by a media panel from the district.

East Liverpool quarterback Austin Mayfield was named first-team All-Division IV. Mayfield finished the season with a single-season school record 1,714 passing yards. He threw 10 touchdown passes and six interceptions while also rushing for 432 yards and nine touchdowns.

Also making the first team for the Potters were senior defensive tackle Freddie Plum and junior linebacker Michael Loy. Plum finished with 75 tackles, eight sacks, 21 tackles for a loss, three forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. Loy finished with a single-season school record 151 tackles, to go with seven sacks and eight tackles for a loss.

Representing Beaver Local on the first team All-Div. IV squad were offensive lineman Terry Adkins and linebacker Michael Clendenning.

Adkins had a 87 percent blocking percentage and 35 pancake blocks. Clendenning paced the defense with 89 tackles, including 15 tackles for a loss and nine sacks. He added three fumbles recovered including a 96-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown.

Making the second team offense was East Liverpool receiver Zach Gill, who finished with 42 catches for 446 yards and six touchdowns. Beaver Local’s Torey Calio landed on the second team defense. Calio finished with 47 tackles, four tackles for a loss, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and one interception.

Earning special mention honors was Beaver Local’s Garrett Givens (410 rushing yards, 79 tackles), while East Liverpool’s Dakota Ice (33 catches 484 yards, one touchdown) and David Locke (62 tackles, six sacks, nine tackles for a loss, one interception, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries) were named honorable mention.
