Potters prevail in goalfest

EAST LIVERPOOL – East Liverpool’s boys soccer team is surging to new heights.

Powered by a second half offensive surge, the Potters edged Beaver Local for the first time since 2008 6-3 on Tuesday at Patterson Field.

East Liverpool, which has had a boys soccer program since the early ’90s, is 6-0 for the first time in the program’s history.

“It’s definitely a great start and everybody is excited, but we’re just taking it game by game. We can’t afford to get ahead of ourselves,” East Liverpool coach Zack Kinsey said.

The Potters spread the wealth around with one goal and one assist each from Klayton Kosek, Briar Meek, Alex Potts and Josh Recktenwald for the Potters. Shane Talbott and Bobby Hill each had single goal tallies, while Nick Pelley had an assist.

Zack Adkins had nine saves in goal for the Potters.

Beaver Local’s three goals came from Chase Hilliard. Jon Tomlinson added an assist and Chase Wilcox had 11 saves.

Beaver Local fell to 3-3 and hosts Crestview Saturday.

East Liverpool and Beaver were tied at 2 at the half and Meek got the Potters the advantage in the second half with a one-on-one goal. Potts scored from 20 yards out to make it 4-2 before Hilliard connected on a free kick to make it 4-3.

The Potters, who are ranked first in the Buckeye 8 and OVAC AAAA divisions, took control the rest of the way.

East Liverpool returns to action on Thursday at Edison.

Alliance 5, Salem 2

SALEM – Salem’s boys soccer team dropped a 5-2 decision to Alliance on Tuesday at Reilly Stadium.

Salem is 1-3 and goals came from Anthony Anzevino and Andrew Pasco.

Salem hosts Newton Falls on Thursday.

West Branch 2, Canton South 1

BELOIT-The West Branch soccer team defeated Canton South 2-1 on Tuesday.

The warriors were powered by goals from Zack Robbins and Kyle Ziegler, while Josiah Ross had an assist.

The Warriors host Ravenna Southeast Thursday.

Minerva 1, Marlington 0

MARLINGTON-Minerva edged Marlington 1-0 in soccer action Tuesday. to remain undefeated.

C.J. Lee scored the lone goal for the Lions (5-0, 2-0 Northeastern Buckeye Conference), while Alec Mueller had the assist.

Marlington drops to 2-2-1 overall and 1-1 in the NBC.

The Dukes won the jayvee game 6-1.
