Golden Bears tie up series with Weir
NEW MANCHESTER, W.Va. – The Oak Glen Golden Bears exploded for six runs in the fourth inning and five more in the sixth, then held on to hand the Weir High Red Riders a 14-9 loss in the second game of West Virginia Region No. 1 sectional on Tuesday at the Field of Dreams.
The third game of the series will be played at 5 p.m. today Wednesday at the Oak Glen Field of Dreams. The winner will advance to the regional semifinal.
The Bears started the scoring in the first with Alec Swiger knocking in Alex Shuman on a fielder’s choice. The Riders scored four times in their first at-bat. Kody Knight and Will Larch both doubled and Jacob Rosnick singled giving the Riders a 4-1 lead. Oak Glen would added two more in the third with Swiger adding his second RBI on a single that scored Kyle Woodruff. Micheal Campbell plated Bub Haddox with an RBI single which brought the score to 4-3 in favor of Weir.
In the fourth the Bears sent 10 men to the plate scoring six runs on five hits. Campbell had a two-bagger and another RBI while Swiger and Bub Haddox collected singles that produced two RBIs each. The Bears scored five runs on just two hits in the sixth taking advantage of Red Riders miscues.Weirton plated three runs in the 6th as Rosnick and Micheal Curtis both doubled.
“Its do or die time”, said Weirton head coach Jason Angle. “We came in with the same attitude and focus that we did last night. I’m happy with that. We battled to the end and and stayed at it. We get to play again tomorrow so we’ll see then how its going to turn out.”
Bear head coach Matt Deveaney said, “We hit the ball better tonight and didn’t give up many walks so with that part of our game I’m satisfied. We’ll need to carry that into the next game if we want to keep playing. Hey, its win or go home. Simple as that.”
Swiger and Shuman led the Bears with three hits each and Derrick Haddox had two hits with Swiger collecting four RBIs on the night. The Red Riders were lead by Larch who had two doubles and Rosnick who had a single and a double.
