BASEBALL: Oak Glen falls to Weir

NEW MANCHESTER, W.Va. – The Oak Glen Golden Bear baseball team stumbled to a 10-1 loss to Weir High in a West Virginia Region No. 1 sectional contest on Monday at the Field of Dreams.

The game had been postponed four times before getting underway on Monday. Weir can close out the series with a win at 5 p.m. today at the Field of Dreams.

The Red Riders struck in the first inning for two runs. After a hit batter and a Will Larch single, Michael Curtis singled to right knocking in both runners. The Bears answered in their half of the inning when Alec Swiger singled in teammate Bub Haddox.

That would be as close as he Bears would get against senior Red Rider pitcher Mitch Viakley.

Viakley gave up just six total hits in a complete game win.

“I’ve faced them before so I knew about how good they are. I just wanted to throw strikes. The guys made the plays behind me and we hit the ball,” said Viakley.

The Riders got two hits each from Larch and Jacob Rosnick. Rosnick knocked in three of the Riders 10 runs. First-year Weir head coach Jason Angle was happy with his young team’s effort saying “They came to play tonight, they stayed alert and played smart baseball. We got the big hits when we needed them.”

For the Bears, sophomore Alec Swiger had two singles and the lone Golden Bear RBI.

“We played flat,” Golden Bear coach Matt Deveaney said. “Viakley was good but we didn’t hit well. We haven’t hit well all season.”
