Potters split softball opener

CARROLLTON – The East Liverpool softball team split its season-opening doubleheader with Carrollton Saturday.

In the first game, Rae Ana Holmes’ double and two RBIs along with RBIs from Lindsay Baker and Elise Smith put the Potters over the Warriors 6-3.

“Having such a young team, it is nice to come out to get our first win of the season against a powerhouse in our district like Carrollton who has always been well coached and full of talent and has had our number each of my coaching staffs first 3 years. I couldn’t be prouder of the girls and the way they played,” East Liverpool coach Erik Adkins said.

The Warriors took control of the second game with a 22-7 victory in three innings. Chelsea Possage scored two runs and a triple, while Baker and Smith each scored a run.

The Potters (1-1) head to Weir Monday.

Southern Local 15, Youngstown Christian 14

SALINEVILLE – The bats were swinging for Southern Local and Youngstown Christian in a close season opener Saturday, but with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, an RBI from Brooke Spencer sent the Indians past the Eagles 15-14.

Alexis Marshall led the Indians (1-0) with three singles and a triple RBI, followed by Hailee Polen with two singles and a double RBI.

Spencer also picked up the win on the mound with six strikeouts and two walks in three innings.

Both teams return to Southern Local on Monday.

NEW CUMBERLAND, W.Va. – The Oak Glen softball team got the bats working in the third inning to blank Weir 13-0 in three innings Friday night at the Oak Glen Field of Dreams.

The Golden Bears improve to 4-0 with strong offensive effort from sophomore Logan Andrews with an RBI triple, along with double RBIs from Marissa Young and Hannah Clunk.

Andrews also picked up the win on the mound with four strikeouts and no walks.

The Golden Bears host Wellsville on Monday.
