ITCL tiers may be changing
Inter-Tri County League superintendents and principals met Thursday to discuss a proposal that would break the league up into three tiers starting with the 2015-2016 school year.
The principals voted 15-0 to pass the proposal, with Sebring choosing to not attend the meeting. Under the ITCL constitution there must now be a 30-day waiting period before the superintendents vote to finalize the measure.
If finalized, the league would break the existing 16 teams up into three tiers called the Red, White and Blue.
Crestview, South Range, Springfield, East Palestine and United would make up the Red Tier. The White Tier would be comprised of Lisbon, Southern, Columbiana, Wellsville and Leetonia. The Blue Tier would be filled out with Western Reserve, Sebring, Jackson-Milton, Mineral Ridge, McDonald and Lowellville.
The breakdown was mostly drawn with geography in mind. Enrollment was given some consideration but was not a priority. The current two-tier breakdown is divided strictly by enrollment, with some schools fluctuating frequently between the two tiers while others have seen their girls and boys teams compete in separate tiers.
For football, schools would be required to schedule two cross-tier games per season as part of their non-conference schedule. For the other sports, each school would play the other schools in their tier twice, while playing every school from the other two tiers once leaving minimum open dates for non-conference scheduling.
Messages left for ITCL commissioner Paul Andraso were not returned.
