Golden Bears rise up over Red Riders

NEW MANCHESTER, W.Va. – West Virginia boys basketball sectional play began Saturday night as No. 4 seed Oak Glen hosted No. 5 seed Weir High.

It wasn’t much of a contest as Oak Glen waltzed to an easy 74-38 win.

Oak Glen earned the right to face section No. 1 seed Fairmont Senior (10-9) at 7 p.m. on Tuesday in the Armory Fieldhouse in Fairmont.

Golden Bear head coach Dave Smith had his team pressing from the start trying to rattle the younger Red Rider squad. Turnovers and bad shot selection found Weir down quickly. Senior Bear Jacob Ford hit three times from beyond the three point line as the Bears ended the first quarter leading by 14.

It didn’t get much better for Weirton in the second, the Oak Glen (4-19) pressure and rebounding held the Riders to just four second quarter points. Controlling the boards, junior Brennan Smith and senior David MaGraw out-rebounded the Riders 12-2 and the Bears went to the half with a lead of 43-17.

At the half coach Smith wanted to slow his squad down for the start of the second half.

“We just need a smooth third quarter. Stay focused and keep doing what we’re doing,” Smith said.

The third quarter went just the way coach Smith wanted as the pace slowed with the Bears keeping Weir (1-20) down by 30, starting the final period with a lead of 54-24. Freshmen Noah Feicht scored most of his game high 11 points in the fourth period. The Golden Bears had 11 players score points.

“Our guys underneath did a good job tonight and we shot well,” Smith said. “We got everyone involved tonight, we had a good effort from everyone.”

Weirton head coach Mike Granota was pleased with his young squad effort, “It’s been a tough year for these young kids, but they hung in there the whole time. We’re very young, we play quite a few freshmen and they gave it a real good effort. We need to work at it this summer and not just pick up the basketball in November.”
