Tigers hope to make meal of competition

STRUTHERS – Inter-Tri County League lower tier champion Wellsville was awarded the top seed on Sunday at the Struthers Div. IV sectional-district tournament draw.

The Tigers will host East Canton at 7 p.m. on Feb. 25 to open the tournament. If Wellsville should win that game, they’ll host Leetonia at 7 p.m. on Feb. 28.

In a departure from tradition in the Northeast district, all sectional games will be hosted by the higher seed.

“That was nice, I like that,” Wellsville coach Dave Thompson said. “The kids like playing in Struthers though because when we go up there they get to go out to eat. They’ll have to win two games to get to go out to eat now.”

McDonald took the second seed with Lowellville third and St. Thomas fourth. The Knights won the Div. III Salem district last season.

Youngstown Christian, seeded ninth, is the defending Struthers district champ. The Eagles won the title as an eighth seed last season.

District semifinals at Struthers Fieldhouse will be played at 7 p.m. on March 3 and 4 with the district final set for 7 p.m. on March 7.
