Tigers halt the Trojans

WELLSVILLE – The Wellsville Tigers are at their best when they are running and trapping, and last night that is what they were did on their way to an 89-41 win over the Sebring Trojans at Wellsville High School in an Inter-Tri County League lower tier matchup.

Wellsville is are now 11-1, 8-0 in the ITCL lower tier. Sebring drops to 4-8, 2-6 in the league.

Sharpshooter Nate Scott paced the Tigers with 34, while tying Sam McIntosh for team honors with five rebounds. Scott found time to dish out six assists and nab four steals. Guardmate Camden Douglas jammed in 17 while also passing out assists. Seth Bradford tallied 10 while pulling down four missed shots and snatching four steals. Brendon Carr and Jordan Sloan each contributed seven points. Antonio Fultz passed out six assists while scoring five points.

Even though Sebring trailed by large margins throughout the game, Eddie Kolisar plugged away, scoring 13 points. He was the only Trojan in double figures. Joe Davis netted eight for Sebring.

Playing at the front of the press, Douglas broke free for seven of the Tigers’ first 10 points including one dunk. Wellsville’s lead expanded to 14-0 before Logan Barnes made a foul shot to end Sebring’s scoring drought. Nate Scott connected for eight points over the final three minutes of the quarter.

Collecting eight steals in the first quarter enabled the Tigers to roar out to a 28-7 lead after the first eight minutes of play.

“Our plan was to press and trap halfcourt,” said Wellsville head coach David “Bug” Thompson. “We didn’t want to let them get into their halfcourt game offensively. As the quarter went on, we extended the press further as the players told us that they could do it and they did. I was concerned about getting into foul trouble.”

After a blistering first quarter, the Tigers cooled off slightly, outscoring their guests 20-15 in the second frame. Coming off the bench, Carr, McIntosh and Jansen Stoakes made vital contributions enabling Thompson’s charges to keep up a fast pace.

“That’s big for us in the whole picture, to get those guys quality playing time,” said Thompson. “We are going to need those guys down the stretch, probably at tournament time. They executed like they were supposed to.”

Though he was disappointed with the outcome, Sebring head coach Josh Scott did see some positives in the loss.

“We saw a lot of poise by our younger guys,” said Scott who is in his first year at Sebring after directing the Western Reserve girls program the past five years. “There wasn’t a lot of positives from a statistical point of view. But, our guys did display a great deal of heart. Let’s be honest. Wellsville is a very good team.”

Utilizing their superior team speed, the Tigers sprinted past the Trojans by a 29-8 count in third period. The scoring barrage was punctuated by a Douglas jam at the 1:33 mark. Scott singed the nets for 19 points during the quarter, leaving the Tigers comfortably in front 77-30 at the end of three quarters.

“Nate started hitting threes. As coaches we have become spoiled,” said the Wellsville mentor. “We have come to expect every shot that he puts up to go in.”

The fourth quarter saw mix of starters and benchmen as both coaches rotated all of their players into the game.

GAME NOTES

In addition to his two dunks, Douglas appeared as though he had the opportunity to dunk on three others, but was fouled each time on his way to the hoop.
