Golden Bears no match for Huskies in sectional opener, 83-32

FARMINGTON, W.Va. – Oak Glen coach Scott Wiley knew coming in what his team was up against.

The Bears had already suffered two defeats this season to North Marion and neither one was close.

On Wednesday, Oak Glen found the Huskies were fully ready for tournament play as they cruised to an 83-32 win over the visiting Bears in a West Virginia Region 1, Section 1 opener.

“We knew what we were up against,” Wiley said. “They are just so deep. They just kept bringing in shooters. They almost had more three’s than two’s. They’re big, they’re physical. They’re the total package.”

The Huskies were hot from the floor as they connected on 12 from beyond the arc and were 11-of-16 from the free throw line.

Audia Bartlett led the way for North Marion with 20 points, while Megan Haller added 14 points and Shasta Pyles netted nine points.

For Oak Glen, Jessica Stivason was the lone player to reach double figures with 11 points while also grabbing five rebounds.

Kaitlyn Herstine netted six points for the Bears, while Oak Glen’s leading scorer Vanessa Hissam was held to just three points, 13 rebounds and three assists.

The Huskies opened a 25-5 lead after one quarter of play and went into the half with a 31-point advantage.

North Marion, which improves to 16-4 on the season including an 11-game winning streak, already had its way with Oak Glen twice this season. The Huskies defeated Oak Glen, 91-42, in New Manchester early in the season and won a 70-42 contest on Friday.

North Marion is one of three new members to the region this year along with Fairmont Senior and East Fairmont which joined Oak Glen and Weir. The Huskies now advance to play Fairmont Senior which has handed North Marion two of its four losses this season.

For the Bears, their season ends at 10-11.

“It’s a lot tougher playing with these new teams in the region,” Wiley said. “We’ve just got to keep plugging away and keep trying to get better.”

With Oak Glen having only one senior on its roster, Casey Patterson, Wiley said he is optimistic going forward.

“I think the future is bright here,” he said. “We had a lot of young players get some major playing time.”
