Beavers take care of Indians

CALCUTTA – In a tightly-contested game, Beaver Local gained control in the fourth quarter and never faultered in gaining a 63-57 victory Wednesday over visiting Southern.

“It was tough game, a rival game with a nice crowd and a lot of energy,” Beaver Local coach Jack Walgate said. “It was neck-in-neck until the end and we were able to hit our free throws and secure the win.”

The Beavers were 18-of-25 at the charity stripe and, according to Walgate, hit “4- or 6-straight” down the stretch.

“Chase Hilliard hit two late free throws, which were crucial,” Walgate said. “I think (our lead) was down to four points at that point.”

The Beavers led by two after the opening frame and pushed the advantage to 31-26 by halftime. Another four-point difference in the third gave the Beavers a 48-39 lead entering the final eight minutes.

“Our guys kept after it tonight. They weren’t backing down,” explained Walgate.

In addition to a nice night at the foul line, the Beavers also hit on 50 percent of their three-pointers (7-14) and outrebounded their opponent 32-24.

Three players reached double figures for the 7-3 Beavers – Zack Mick tallied 16 points, including an impressive 4-of-5 mark from 3-point land, Troy Hudson had 15 points and a team-best 8 rebounds amd Jared Lyder had 12 poiunts, 7 boards and 4 assists.

Hilliard added 8 points, 3 steals and 2 assists for the winners, and Ethan Campbell hit two treys and finished with 7.

For Southern (6-3), Kyler Woodward finished with a double-double – 19 points and 12 rebounds, both high marks for the game. Dylan Ketchum added 18 points, including 4 three-pointers, and Luke Griffith added 12 points. Both Jared Shilot and Griffith pulled down 5 rebounds and JJ Napierkowski and Griffith each delivered 3 assists.

The Indians were only 2-of-7 at the foul line amd hit only 5-of-22 from behind the three-point line.

In JV play. Southern was a 44-39 winner as Troy Holden scored 11 points and Christian Adkins added 10. The Beavers were paced by Hayden Grafton with 11 points.

Both teams are back at it later this week -Beaver Local plays Friday at Poland, while Southern plays host to Edison on Saturday.

MOON TOWNSHIP – Cameron Johnson netted 21 points and Nick Metz added 13 as Our Lady of Sacred Heart handed South Side a 68-35 loss in WPIAL action Wednesday night.

For South Side, Jon Magusiak had a team-high 16 points and Lucas Collett added 9.

The Rams also lst the JV game by a 53-28 count as Jake Berger scored 10 for the locals.

South Side (4-7) plays Friday at Sto-Rox in a Class AA Section 6 game.
