ROGERS - The village will have fire protection for five more years following approval of its contract with the Negley Volunteer Department.
Council approved renewal of the contract at its Aug. 25 meeting, nearly two months after it expired on June 30.
The original contract, which was for three years, was entered into in 2011 after the Rogers Fire Department dissolved and the Negley VFD agreed to resume responsibility for providing fire services to the village. In exchange, the Negley VFD is to be paid with the proceeds from the existing village fire levy, which generates $2,200 per year.
As part of the agreement, the Negley VFD maintains the Rogers Fire Hall, where it keeps a fire truck to respond to fires.
In related news, council agreed to pay the Negley VFD $3,206 for work performed on fire trucks, with the money coming from the levy fund, leaving only a balance of $1,100.
Councilman Tom Chambers reported they expect to be able to add a fifth member to council at the Sept. 8 meeting. Membership on the six-person council was reduced to four following the resignation of Michael Hunt, who moved to West Point.
Chambers said he approached a man about taking Hunt's seat and the man indicated he was interested. Amy Burkey has also expressed interest in serving on council but she would not be eligible for appointment until October.
Council also reappointed Homer Carnes street superintendent for another year at the same pay rate of $250 per month. The residency requirement was also waived for Carnes, who lives outside the village.
Chambers reported he would seek quotes from contractors to repair a section of roof village hall, which is leaking.
Finally, Kimberly Mitchell said she would like to host a ghost tour in Rogers, noting the village has some interesting ghost stories involving the former college, the old general store and hotel.
"There's a huge interest in ghost walks," said Mitchell, who described herself as a ghost hunter.
Council said they would be willing to give their approval once Mitchell is able to provide something in writing on what she proposes and when. She hopes to host a ghost tour in October.
