EAST LIVERPOOL - The Carrollton Warriors exploded for 365 yards in total offense in the first half on their way to a 44-2 season-opening win over the East Liverpool Potters Friday night at Patterson Field in East Liverpool.
Carrollton quarterback Zade Deitz rushed for 116 yards and three touchdowns on just six carries in the first half. Fullback Tyler Dodd tallied twice on runs of four and 29 yards. Avery Wilson raced 83 yards down the left sideline with a Deitz aerial for the Warriors' other first-half tally as Carrollton led 41-0 at halftime.
Per Ohio High School Athletic Association rules, the second half was played with a running clock since the margin was in excess of 30 points.
Carrollton's Daniel Leary kicked a 34-yard field goal in the third quarter, pushing the Warrior lead to 44 points.
"We definitely have things to work on and correct," said East Liverpool head coach Josh Ludwig, who was making his head coaching debut. "There were points in the first quarter when we were right there with them. I was glad to see that we didn't get down on ourselves, or on each other. We stuck together."
Fullback Dillan Reynolds paced the Potters on the ground with 35 yards on 12 carries. Kade Reynolds picked up 14 yards on eight tries.
Sophomore quarterback Austin Mayfield completed 4 of 14 passes for 16 yards. He was intercepted three times.
The Potters got on the scoreboard late in the fourth quarter when they tackled a Carrollton runner in the end zone.
"I was glad to see that even though we were down, we were still fighting as a team," Ludwig said. "We made too many mistakes, but give Carrollton credit. They are a good team and they will win a number of games."
Carrollton's defense limited the Potters to 63 yards in total offense. East Liverpool was only flagged four times for 31 yards.
Carrollton finished with 392 yards in total on 33 plays from scrimmage. They were penalized 10 times for 71 yards.
Carrollton hosts Edison Local on Friday, while the Potters travel to Indian Creek.
"We will get in the film room and make corrections," said the Potter mentor. "We have a rivalry game next week with Indian Creek. We will have to bring everything we have to be successful on the road next week."
Fans attending the JV game this morning at Carrollton are encouraged to take their own lawn chairs as the stadium bleachers at Carrollton are still under construction.
