CADIZ-When Bob Shansky took over as East Liverpool's volleyball coach, the program had barely gotten off the ground. He never dreamed he'd stick around long enough to reach 500 wins.
"It was only our second year of having a team at East Liverpool," Shansky said. "I think there were 20 people in the stands. A lot has changed since then."
Thirty-nine years later, Shansky-who is also the school's athletic director- notched career win number 500 as the Potters blew out Harrison Central 25-12, 25-12, 25-7 Thursday.
"No coach can get to 500 without a lot of good players," Shansky said. "The first thing I thought about was all of the good players that went through here."
Shansky has enjoyed a number of highlights over his long career, including a Div. II regional final apperance in 2011.
"Each team I've coached had its own identity," Shansky said. "It's tough to pick out one thing that really stands out. I've enjoyed every team."
The Potters (2-1) came out determined to deliver Shansky his milestone win and made quick work of the Huskies. Robin Johnston led the charge with 14 points, while Caitlyn Davis had 10 points and 12 kills and Sierra Voorhees had 10 assists. Afterward, they celebrated with cupcakes and pictures.
"I could tell the players wanted this win very badly," Shansky said. "They came out ready to play."
Harrison Central won the jayvee game 26-24, 12-25, 25-21.
