EAST LIVERPOOL - With one member opposed, Robert Shansky was re-appointed as the city school district's athletic director during a special board of education meeting Monday.
The board had voted 3-2 against renewing Shansky's extra-curricular contract during a meeting April 14, with board President Janice Martin and members Brian Allen and Scott Dieringer opposed. At that time, Dieringer said he believed the position should be an administrative one, held by someone with adequate time to devote to the job, not after fulfilling a day's duties as a teacher. Shansky is also a teacher in the district.
At a recent athletic committee meeting, which Dieringer chaired, he said a grievance had been filed over the board's failure to renew Shansky's contract.
In the voting Monday, Dieringer cast the sole opposing vote to Shansky's reappointment, offering no reason.
Shansky will be paid $5,176.46 for the 2014-15 school year.
Other personnel matters approved during Monday's meeting was the hiring of former district employee Rebecca Manning to provide special education director consultant services on an as-needed substitute basis to assist newly-hired special education Director Jennifer Enochs.
Also hired was Stephanie Knauff of Bridgeville, Pa., as a math teacher; Julie Rowe as English chair; Whitney Taylor-Washington and Michelle Roberts as Friday night school monitors; and Roberts and Sharon Caiazza as detention monitors.
A contract with Campopiano Roofing for $7,022 to replace the metal deck on the main entrance canopy at Westgate was approved, as was a service contract with the county Educational Service Center.
The board's regular meeting is set for 6 p.m. Aug. 11, with an athletic committee scheduled for 5 p.m.
