Thank heaven someone called police to a house in Wheeling Island on a recent afternoon.
Who called police and why was not clear, though it may well have been because of what officers found when they arrived.
An 18-month-old child was asleep in a car in front of the house, officers reported. She was soaked in sweat.
Inside the house, her father was passed out on a sofa, according to the police report. He was arrested and charged with child neglect. Because of his condition, he was taken to a hospital where cocaine, marijuana and other drugs were found in his system.
It is impossible to say what would have happened to the child had police not arrived - but clearly, she was in peril.
Again, someone called the police, possibly out of concern for the little girl.
No doubt officers respond to some false alarms regarding children at risk. But when there is any question about the health and/or safety of a child, action simply must be taken.
