EAST LIVERPOOL - On July 1, East Liverpool City Hospital celebrated the two-year anniversary of the Medical Education Program.
City Hospital welcomed nine additional residents to the program and celebrated the graduation of one. This year's program will have a total of 20 physicians participating - eight Family Medicine physicians and 12 Internal Medicine physicians. Five of the newest residents are Internal Medicine physicians and four are Family Medicine physicians. This class of resident physicians comes to East Liverpool from as far away as Houston, Texas and Park City, Utah.
ELCH currently operates both an Internal Medicine Residency and Family Medicine Residency. The young physicians who enter the program at City Hospital spend the next three years residing in the local area, and not only working within the hospital but also working in area physician offices.

"It's such a great feeling to have so many of today's brightest young medical minds sharing, learning, and working together right here in our community," said Dr. Gretchen Nickell, director of Medical Education. "With such diverse medical issues here in our local community, East Liverpool City Hospital represents learning opportunities for these young men and women that will serve them well as their careers move forward."
Despite being only two years old, the Medical Education Program already has graduated two residents: Dr. Vince Yu and Dr. Wayne Sherman.
Yu was the program's first graduate in 2013. He has accepted a fellowship in the Miami, Fla., area.
Sherman, this year's graduate, will remain in practice locally and has been contracted by City Hospital as a "hospitalist," working within the facility.
"Well for me it was an easy choice, I felt so welcomed two years ago, by the great people who work at ELCH, that I just feel like I am part of the family now," Sherman said as to his staying in the area.
