Joseph L. Covington, 36, Mesa, Ariz., pleaded guilty in Columbiana County Common Pleas Court to carrying a concealed weapon, having weapons while under a disability, and discharging a firearm on or near a prohibited premises with a firearm specification.
East Liverpool police were reportedly called on Nov. 4, 2013 after Covington reportedly shot at a vehicle, with two men inside, who reportedly returned fire. While investigating the matter, Covington was reportedly found with a .38-caliber gun hidden in his waistband.
Covington faces up to seven and a half years in prison with a mandatory three-year sentence for the firearms specification. Additionally he could be fined up to $30,000. Sentencing is set for July 28.
In another matter, Judge Scott Washam overruled a motion to suppress the evidence found in Mecit Bicer's apartment while Alexander Brauning was there on Jan. 20.
Brauning, 27, of Dover, is charged with felonious assault following an alleged shooting incident in the area of the Night Court in Lisbon. Washam ruled the defendant had no legitimate expectation of privacy while in the apartment and therefore the warrantless search was legal. Lisbon police reportedly found Brauning passed out on the floor in the apartment of his boss, Bicer. A .45-caliber handgun was found under a chair.
One of two men accused of taking cables from Columbiana, Jonathon Cook, 26, South West Street, Columbiana, pleaded guilty to the theft. He had taken a power cable belonging to the city of Columbiana on Oct. 7, 2013. He faces up to 12 months in prison and a $2,500 fine. Sentencing is set for July 28.
Gene B. Wright, 30, New Cumberland, W.Va., was sentenced to 18 months in prison, but credited with 18 days already served. Wright previously pleaded guilty to possession of drugs for heroin and illegal conveyance of a drug of abuse onto the grounds of a detention facility for having it in the St. Clair Township police station holding cell on Jan. 19, 2013.
Mykel L. Crooms, 27, last known address Clarks Mill Road, Hammondsville, was sentenced to three years probation including an indefinite term at the Eastern Ohio Correction Center for trespassing into a habitation for kicking open the door and going into the home of Michael Collins, McKinnon Avenue, East Liverpool, on Aug. 3, 2013.
