EAST LIVERPOOL - Norman E. Mattern, of Hammond School Road, passed away Thursday, May 1, 2014, at the East Liverpool City Hospital. He was 81.
Born in East Liverpool, Aug. 4, 1932, he was a son of the late Howard G. and Thelma Rager Mattern. He worked for the Akron Beacon Journal as a machinist until retiring. Previously, he worked at The Review and the Beaver County Times.
A 1952 graduate of East Liverpool High School, he was a member of the Good Shepherd United Methodist Church. At one time, he was a member of the East Liverpool Beagle Club and served as president of the Muscular Dystrophy Association of Columbiana County.
His wife, Naomi A. White Mattern, survives at home. The couple married Nov. 7, 1953.
There are two daughters, Connie Benton, and her husband Robert, of Allentown, Pa., and Vicky Souders of East Liverpool; as well as a son, Norman P. Mattern of East Liverpool.
Three grandchildren survive: Natalie Reed, and her husband Eric, Summer Gordon, and her husband Eric, and Erik Souders, and his wife Tia; along with seven great-grandchildren: Eli, Wyatt, Scarlett, Emersyn, Clifton, Caleigh, and Andrue.
Other survivors include his brothers-in-law: Kenny White, Elbert White, and Jim White and Gene Frasier.
He was preceded in death by three sisters, Docia Powell, Nancy Mason and Cathy Frasier.
Friends may visit Saturday at the Dawson Funeral Home where the family will be present from 1-5 p.m. Pastor Richard Smith of the church will conduct a funeral service at 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home where friends may visit two hours prior to the service.
Following the service, family and friends will gather at the Dawson Family Center for fellowship.
Burial will be at Spring Grove Cemetery.
