LISBON -A Beaver Local faculty member will retain her job for the time being following a decision not to act by the board of education on Monday evening.
Members of the Beaver Local Education Association, the union representing teachers within the Beaver Local School District, filled the room when the board met in regular session at the high school.
The agenda item that brought so many of them to the meeting was the non-renewal of the teaching contract of Kathleen Mahoney Chianese, an intervention specialist at Beaver Local Middle School, recommended by Superintendent Kent Polen, to be voted on board members.
When asked about the specific issue related to the potential end of her employment with the district, Chianese declined to comment. Similarly, Chianese's colleagues, as well as Polen and board members, declined to comment on the issue.
Chianese's contract was officially approved by the board at the beginning of the 2012-13 school year, in September 2012. She also coaches cheerleading at the middle school in this, her second school year at Beaver Local.
Chianese sat at the meeting with her husband, Gregg Chianese, and consulted with BLEA representative Patty Howe and Dan Day, a labor relations advisor with the Ohio Education Association.
Following a closed-door executive session for personnel matters that lasted more than two hours, board members delivered an anticlimactic decision, voting to table the issue until the next meeting. It should be noted that there was a second executive session, also for personnel matters, on the meeting agenda, at the end of the meeting, with no decision to be made afterward.
