CLAYTON - George Austin Snyder Sr., 91, of Clayton, passed away on Friday, April 4, 2014. He was born and married in Wellsville, Ohio.
George was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps during WWII, surviving four invasions in the Pacific, and receiving a Purple Heart for being wounded on Iwo Jima. He was an accomplished welder, retiring from Iron Workers Local 290. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and a 32nd Degree Mason of the John Durst Lodge 716. George was also a member of the Purple Heart Association, where he formerly served as a chaplain, the Disabled American Veterans and the American Legion Post 707. He loved to drive his 1931 Model A Ford Roadster.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 71 years, Catherine L. (Shutyak) Snyder; sons Roy A. (Janet) Snyder of Marylan, and George A. (Ann) Snyder Jr. of Dayton; grandchildren Adrienne Lee (Christopher) Horodowicz, Adam Lee (Adrienne) Snyder, Nathaniel Austin Snyder, and Rachel Marie Snyder; great-grandchildren Ava Claire and Jane Alise Horodowicz, and Lincoln Wellington Snyder; sister Patricia Allison of East Liverpool; brothers Claude (Mary) Snyder of Vandalia, Donald (Ella Mae) Snyder of East Liverpool, Norman (Ruth) Snyder of Gallipolis, and Clarence Snyder of Florida; amd nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents Roy Ellsworth and Grace (Ferguson) Snyder; brothers Roy, Bob and Tom Snyder; grandson G. Austin Snyder III; and brother-in-law Harold Allison.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 12, 2014, at Kindred Funeral Home, 400 Union Blvd., Englewood, with Rev. Kim Armentrout officiating. Interment will follow the service at Arlington Cemetery in Brookville. The family will receive friends 5-7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Dayton Children's Hospital or Hospice of Dayton.
