EAST LIVERPOOL - Voters in the city school district will likely be asked in November to approve an emergency levy that was renewed five years ago.
The school board voted Monday night, authorizing Treasurer Todd Puster to request from the county auditor the calculation of millage necessary to renew the levy, which raises $1,058,000 annually.
Once the auditor provides that information, the board will have to consider approving a resolution actually authorizing placement of the levy on the November ballot.
Renewals do not result in increases in taxes, if approved.
Puster was also given authorization to retain legal counsel to file tax valuation appeal claims and counter-claims with the county Board of Revision if he feels it necessary on two business owners, who are seeking a reduction in taxes on their properties.
Ceramic City Ltd, owner of Blossom Hill Apartments, is seeking a reduction of $4,213 on a total valuation of $361,500, while E. L. Nursing Realty LLC, owner of Nentwick Convalescent Center, is seeking a reduction of $24,885 on total valuation of $2.1 million.
The board also voted Monday to purchase a 55-passenger International bus body and chassis from Truck Sales and Service for the transportation of handicapped children.
The bus will cost $98,349, and the board also approved the purchase of bus vehicle diagnostic equipment and software for $2,070. Also approved was the trade-in of two buses for $4,500.
After being tabled at a previous meeting, a 2014-2015 school calendar was approved, with board member Scott Dieringer opposed. The calendar requires any calamity days to be made up at the end of the school year.
Dieringer said after the meeting he opposed the calendar because he believes parent-teacher conferences are not held often enough, saying they should be every nine weeks, not once a semester.
At the recommendation of Superintendent James Herring, the board approved canceling a waiver day April 17 for student learning objectives, instead holding a regular school day, which he said the teachers' union agreed to. The change is pending state approval.
