EAST LIVERPOOL - Following a closed-door session called for pending litigation, the city school board voted unanimously Monday night to authorize the purchase of a tractor that has been in use several months.
Board members made no comment on the matter prior to the vote, but President Janice Martin said after the meeting that it was approved as a "then and now" purchase, essentially retroactively.
The board had voted 4-1 at its last meeting against the purchase, with member Larry Walton offering the sole support for the measure.
After that meeting, Martin explained that the board had not known the tractor had already been purchased and was in use by the agriculture program and said she intended to seek legal advice on how to proceed, pointing out it was unlikely to be brought back before the board since the majority had voted against approving the purchase, albeit retroactively.
She did not offer a reason last night for why that changed and the issue was brought back for a vote.
The cost of the tractor, including trade-in of another tractor, was $17,744.
The board also removed from the table a recommendation to enter into contract with BSHM Architects of Youngstown for improvements to the Westgate facility, which was approved unanimously.
Approved was authorization to prepare plans, specifications and bid documents for roof repairs and replacement of the heating, cooling and air conditioning system.
Also approved during the meeting:
*Entering into a public funds depository agreement with Home Savings & Loan Co., Youngstown
*The resignation of Kim Daugherty as assistant varsity cheerleading adviser, effective at the end of the current basketball season
*Appointment of David Wright as North Elementary custodian at a salary of $26,929
*Purchase of literature textbooks for grades 9 and 10 at a cost of $24,000.
Board member Brian Allen offered his condolences to the family of Dr. Robert Beatty, noting he had served many years as the school district's team physician.
The board entered a second executive session to discuss preparations for negotiations with both the East Liverpool Education Association and Ohio Association of Public School Employees, whose contracts expire in August. No action was anticipated.
The board's next regular meeting will be at 6 p.m. March 24.
