The Review

UHRICHSVILLE - It was a tough road to Columbus through the Div. II district wrestling tournament at Claymont High School.

Beaver Local, which sent a record 10 wrestlers to the district, advanced two to the state meet.

Daniel Hasson, a junior, led the Beavers with a second-place finish in the 138-pound class. Hasson (41-4) lost to Claymont's Cody Burcher by pin in 1:07 in the championship final.

Hasson won one of his three matches at the state tournament last year in the same weight class.

Beaver Local senior Cody Martsolf (35-12) will be making his first appearance at the state meet after he took fourth in the heavyweight class after a 3-2 loss to Licking Valley's Jaqui Vanmeter in the consolation final.

East Liverpool's 106-pounder Alex Potts (40-3) punched his ticket to Columbus by placing third in his weight class. The junior had an easy consolation final as Jay Noah of Whitehall-Yearling forfeited.

Beaver Local's Jack Dawson (34-12) finished fifth (113). The top four finishers in each weight class advanced to the state meet.

Minerva's Dalton Hartshorn (48-4) won the 145-pound championship with a 10-6 decision over Claymont's Caden Herron. This will be Hartshorn's second trip to the state tournament.

Minerva senior Harrison Hoppel (40-5) took second at 220 pounds after a 7-6 loss to Jonathan Alder's Troy Caldwell in the championship final. Hoppel was fifth at state last year in the same weight class.

Minerva's Josiah Hrusch (113, 34-11) took fourth after losing an 11-2 major decision to Ana Abdulijelil in the consolation final.

Claymont came out as kings of the tournament with 11 overall state qualifiers including five first place winners. Steubenville scored the second most points as a team but only had two state qualifiers.

GARFIELD HEIGHTS - Wellsville's Seth Bloor and United's Charlie Smith both qualified for next week's state wrestling tournament after gracing the consolation final in their respective weight classes on Saturday at the Division III district tournament at Garfield Heights High School.
