EAST LIVERPOOL - The city's Civil Service Commission will be holding a competitive exam for an entry-level firefighter in the spring after a request for the test was made by Service-Safety Director Ryan Estell.

The commission tentatively set the exam test date on April 2, depending upon if a room is available from Kent State University. The date of an agility test for successful test candidates has not yet been set.

City Council recently set aside $60,000 in the budget for hiring an additional firefighter.

Commission members also decided that the water distribution foreman position may be filled by promotion rather than requiring a competitive exam be held, due to the Class II distribution license required of the position.

Several personnel matters were approved by commissioners, including the permanent appointments of Robert Smith and Jeffrey Giles as laborers in the Refuse & Recycling Department (R&R) at $10.45 per hour; Jason Conkle as meter reader in the water department at $17.62 per hours and Chad Roe as meter reader, $16.80 per hour.

Transfer appointments approved included Arthur Talbert from City Hall maintenance to heavy equipment operator in the water department at $17 per hour; Gary Blake from R&R to street department driver, $13.95 per hour; and Mark Deets from R&R to City Hall maintenance at $15.25 per hour.

Resignations were accepted from Debra Schmidbauer, cashier/clerk and Tom White, operator, both in the water department, and from Matthew Carter, laborer in R&R.

During the re-organizational portion of the meeting, the commission elected David Bickerton as chairman for this year.

The next regular meeting will be held at 5:15 p.m. March 5.
