EAST LIVERPOOL-Evelyn Thornton, 87, of East Liverpool, passed away Sunday, Feb. 9, 2014, at East Liverpool City Hospital Following a lengthy illness.
She was born in Columbia, S.C., on Aug. 8, 1926, and was a daughter of the late Milton B. Spann Sr. and Alice R. (Hoefer) Spann. Having spent her entire life in the area, she was a 1944 graduate of Wellsville High School. She was a member of the First Baptist Church where she served as a Deaconess, Pastors Aid, a Sunday School Teacher and on the Mothers Board. Evelyn was a licensed beautician for 47 years.
She is survived by a daughter: Arlene Williams and her husband Ronald of East Liverpool; three grandchildren: Michael Williams, Tonia Poole and Shawn Williams; and eight great-grandchildren: Elijah Ross, Jhemyah Ross, Jalen Williams, Ashimah Ross, Rheinah Ross, Shamara Williams, Tashawn Williams, and Zaiven Williams.
In addition to her parents, Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas N. Thornton whom she married Jan. 25, 1946; two brothers: Clarence Spann and Milton Spann; and two sisters: Helen Diggs, and Lilly West.
Funeral services will be held at the First Baptist Church in Wellsville on Friday, Feb. 14, 2014, at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Hubert Clardy of the church, officiating.
Burial will take place in Spring Hill Cemetery.
The family will be present to receive friends at the Wellsville Chapel of the Martin MacLean Altmeyer Funeral Homes on Thursday, Feb. 13, 2014 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m.
