Officers responded Sunday night to the Dollar General store on Walnut Street for a report that Todd A. Hawthorne, 31, Boring Lane, was shoplifting. They reported arriving to find a vehicle sliding around the bend out of the store parking lot, where they blocked the vehicle to prevent it from leaving. Hawthorne, a passenger in the vehicle, reportedly was seen reaching into his pants and underneath the seat and both he and the driver were told several times to put their hands in the air. When they failed to do so, the officer drew his weapon, and they complied. The store manager told police the vehicle nearly backed over her and an employee. Surveillance video reportedly showed Hawthorne taking a bottle of lotion and concealing it prior to him paying for a package of toilet paper. He was also found with an air freshener from the store, according to reports. Hawthorne was charged with petty theft, and the driver was told not to return to Dollar General property at the manager's request. He was not charged.
