CALCUTTA - Slippery roads caused a one-car accident on state Route 11, less than a quarter-mile south of the state Route 170 exit ramp in St. Clair Township, around 10:30 p.m. Saturday.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol reported that Coree Jacobs of Austintown was driving south when she hit the center median and lost control of her Dodge Caravan, causing her to drive into a ditch and land on a hilltop.

Bill Bennett, assistant chief for the Glenmoor Fire Department, noted that the angle of the vehicle was a concern as fire crews attempted to rescue Jacobs and her three passengers.

Hydraulic stabilization jacks were used by Glenmoor, Calcutta and Liverpool Township firefighters to keep a van from rolling over after it crashed into the median barrier on state Route 11, crossed over the lanes going off the right side of the road, continuing up a hill and stopped, hanging precariously on the hillside. Once the van was stabilized firefighters were able to extricate the four occupants from the passenger side and get them down the hill. "The vehicle was at an unsafe angle when we arrived," Bennett said. "We had to use two rescue struts to be able to stabilize the vehicle."

The rescue became easier once the vehicle was stabilized and the passenger sliding door became accessible.

"Once we were able to get to the sliding door, we were able to walk them out without problem," Bennett said.

Jacobs and at least two of her three passengers were taken by Tri-County Ambulance to East Liverpool City Hospital for minor injuries. The names of the passengers were not available.

"The driver said that she was injured, and the passengers said that they had injuries as well," Trooper Vic Wolfe, who is handling the investigation, said. "One of the passengers, though, was pregnant, and as a precaution, she was taken to the hospital to be checked."

The accident caused a section of state Route 11 to be closed to southbound traffic for over an hour. The road, which was closed off at the state Route 170 on ramp, was reopened around 11:50 p.m.

Along with Glenmoor fire and the highway patrol, fire crews from Liverpool Township and Calcutta and police from Liverpool Township and St. Clair Township also assisted at the scene.

Jacobs was cited for failure to control.
