EAST LIVERPOOL -City police detectives are cautioning residents of a scam circulating by phone that cost one woman nearly $300 this week.

According to police, a Cora Street woman was contacted by a Windows Service Center about her home computer, telling her there was a problem with her computer.

The man, speaking with an Indian accent, convinced the woman to spend $70 for a cleanup of her computer, which she was told was out of date.

The caller apparently charged the woman's PayPal account $1 to see if it was active then charged $280 on her account for the alleged cleanup service.

The victim researched the incident with Windows Service Center and learned it is a nationwide scam.

Officers encouraged anyone called by someone about this service to just hang up.
