January 2, 2014
The Review

EAST LIVERPOOL - Joyce Ellen Baker Sylvies, formerly of Cora Street in East Liverpool, passed away at the age of 90 at 1 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2013, at Stone Pear Pavilion at the Orchards of Foxcrest. Joyce's family had lovingly cared for her throughout her extensive illness.

She was born in East Liverpool on May 8, 1923, a daughter of the late Earl A. and Irene Evans Baker. A 1941 graduate of East Liverpool High School, Joyce remained a proud alumnus and had been involved in the ELHS Alumni Association and its Olde Guard.

For many years, Joyce had served as secretary for East Liverpool City Schools, retiring in 1989.

Kind and considerate to everyone she encountered, she most cherished the lifelong circle of friendship she shared with Katherine, Ruth, Del and Mary. But by far her greatest love was for her family she leaves behind.

Surviving are two daughters: Anne Lynn Swoger and her husband, Richard, and Christy Talbert; and a son, Dr. Robert B. Sylvies and his wife, Jill, all of East Liverpool.

There are four grandchildren, Lindsey Dorn and her husband Patrick, Christopher J. Talbert and his wife, Cathy, Breanne Montero and her husband, Gino, and Brady Gunter. Two great-grandchildren, Natalie Talbert and Evan Dorn; and two nephews, Ron Bennett and Don Bennett; along with a niece, Barbara Bennett, survive as well.

Joyce was preceded in death on Sept. 8, 2004, by her husband, H. Robert Sylvies, whom she married on June 28, 1943. She was also preceded by her sister, Alice Bennett.

Friends may visit at the Dawson Funeral Home today, where the family will be present from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m.

Services will be held at the funeral home at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, with her son Dr. Robert B. Sylvies officiating.

Joyce will be laid to rest next to her husband at Columbiana County Memorial Park, followed by a continued time of fellowship at the Dawson Family Center.

Memorial contributions may be made in her name to: The First Church of the Nazarene, 670 Walnut St., East Liverpool, OH 43920.
