EAST LIVERPOOL - The Ursuline Irish outscored Steubenville Big Red 28-15 in the fourth quarter on their way to a 63-57 win in opening round action of the Potter Holiday Classic at East Liverpool's Potter Fieldhouse. The Irish will oppose Painesville Harvey in the championship Saturday night. Painesville Harvey defeated host East Liverpool 70-66 in overtime in the other opening round game.
Steubenville will play East Liverpool in the consolation game Saturday night. Tipoff is slated for 6 p.m.
Mark Hughes paced Ursuline (4-2) with 18 points, many on dazzling drives. His guardmate David Collins was close behind with 17, primarily from the outside. Steubenville (2-2) was led by guard Brandon Herring-Hill's 18. Postman Chris Smith tallied 16 and was strong on the boards.
In the first quarter, the Irish jumped out to a 12-7 lead before Steubenville rallied to take a 15-12 lead after one quarter on the strength of eight points by Smith.
Steubenville led 23-19 at halftime and 42-35 after three quarter before Ursuline rallied.
The lead switched back and forth until Ursuline to a 54-52 lead on a strong inside move by Paul Jackson with 1:16 remaining.
