EAST LIVERPOOL - A man was flown by helicopter to a Pittsburgh hospital with a stab wound to the leg Friday night after an incident in the Green Lane area.
Officers were initially called to Green Lane and East Eighth Street just after 11 p.m. for a report of a man swinging an ax. As they were checking the area, officers were told there was a man stabbed in front of the Oasis Cafe on St. Clair Avenue.
There, they found a 45-year-old man lying on the sidewalk with a wound to his left leg, but he was uncooperative, refusing to give officers any information about what had happened. A trail of blood, however, led from the original Green Lane area to in front of the Oasis, according to police.
The victim was transported to East Liverpool City Hospital by Lifeteam ambulance and then flown to Pittsburgh.
Detectives said Monday that further investigation showed the man was actually stabbed in the leg with a knife recovered at the scene, not an ax, and that the man who stabbed him reported being assaulted by the victim, who was swinging a table leg which resembled an ax in the dark due to its shape and an attachment.
The 31-year-old man who allegedly stabbed him was reacting to the victim swinging the table leg, according to police.
Names have not yet been released, although officers said the stabbing victim has been released from the hospital and no charges had been filed.
The incident remains under investigation.
