EAST LIVERPOOL The deaths of two men whose bodies were recently discovered at Beaver Creek State Park are still under investigation by the county coroner's office.
Investigator Brandi Phillips said Friday the cause of death for Columbiana fisherman James Smith in July has not yet been finalized, although she expects those results any day.
Smith was found in the creek the morning after he was reported missing by his family. He had gone to the park to practice fly fishing July 29 and never returned for supper, resulting in a massive land, water and air search.
His body was found the next morning about a quarter mile from Picnic Area No. 1, in the water.
This week, the body of 50-year-old Gahanna resident Gregory Shannon was found in the same area of the park, except on land, dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Phillips said Friday that, while it appears to have been a case of suicide, Coroner Dr. William Graham has not officially ruled that as the cause, saying blood results are still being awaited.
