Michael J. Smith, 35, Toronto, was charged Tuesday with theft after his employer at Advanced Auto Parts in Calcutta reported an employee stealing money. According to reports, Smith made it appear that a customer had returned a fuel pump, and he pocketed the $181 that would have been refunded. Smith reportedly told officers his ex-wife had been arrested in Youngstown for selling heroin and he needed the money to retain an attorney to get sole custody of his children, who he does not want exposed to their mother's alleged drug activities. Smith told officers he had the money he reportedly took in his bank account and would repay it. Smith was terminated from the store and advised not to come back, according to reports.
Hollie Reese, no address listed, reported having $1,000 stolen while she was at the Splish Splash Laundromat on Calcutta-Smith Ferry Road. She gave police the names of possible suspects she had seen in her truck.
Officers responded to Giant Eagle for a possibly counterfeit $20 bill having been received. The bill was sent for testing.
