GREER, S.C. - Former East Liverpool and Lisbon resident, Norman Lawrence "Larry" Carroll Jr., passed away Tuesday evening, Sept. 3, 2013, at Interim Health Hospice near his home in Greer, S.C., following a courageous four-month battle with cancer. He was 69.
He was born on June 1, 1944, in East Liverpool, a son of the late Norman L. Carroll Sr. and Velma Coleman Carroll. A 1962 graduate of Beaver Local High School, Larry had remained in this area and was well-known for many years as an Ohio State Highway Patrolman. He had also been associated with Cincinnati Insurance Company, a position which took him to South Carolina in 1984, and had been past-president of the Piedmont Claims Association. Larry had also maintained his membership at the Grand Lodge of F&AM of Ohio, Lisbon Lodge, where he was a Mason.
In South Carolina, he was an owner of ServiceMaster of the Upstate and was a member of Tyger River Presbyterian Church. A rock-solid family man, and a friend to all, he volunteered in many ways, but was especially proud to be associated with the Greenville Eagles Soccer Club, Upstate Girls Soccer Association and Eastside High School Soccer Program.
Larry's wife of 38 years, Jane Miller Carroll, survives at home. They were married on May 10, 1975.
He also leaves behind a son, Kristofer Carroll and his wife, Mary Ann, of Mauldin, S.C.; and a daughter, Beth Ewing and her husband, Jonathan, of Colorado Springs, Colo. There are four cherished grandchildren: Miller, Keaton, Adelaide and Lorelei Ewing.
Also surviving are Larry's siblings: Marvin Carroll and his wife, Marcia, of Lisbon; Kevin Carroll and his wife, April, of East Liverpool; Marilyn Matheny and her husband, Keith, of Lyman, S.C.; Jackie Carroll of Gray Court, S.C.; Jannine Carroll of East Liverpool; and Michelle Crouse and her husband, Tom, of Palmyra, Pa. Additional survivors include his aunt, Lois Myers of East Liverpool, father-in-law and mother-in-law, Bill and Marilyn Bergert of Lisbon; brothers-in-law Bob Miller and his wife, Kathy; Jim Bergert and his wife, Pauline; Dan Bergert and his wife, Ellen; and numerous nieces, nephews and legions of friends.
Preceding him in death in February 1973 was his first wife, Pam Bissell Carroll, and their sons, Randy and Jeff Carroll. Larry was also preceded by a sister, Linda Carroll Six, and brothers-in-law Dan Six and Pete Miller.
Friends may visit at the Longs Run Presbyterian Church on Wednesday, where the family will be present from 10 a.m. to noon. The Rev. Dr. Steve Cramer of the church will officiate at a funeral service at noon, followed by burial at Columbiana County Memorial Park. Family and friends will then return to the church for a continued time of fellowship.
