EAST LIVERPOOL - Jerry M. Burke, 71, of East Liverpool, died at home on Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2013, following a lengthy illness. He was born in East Liverpool on July 20, 1941, the son of the late Theodore and Louise (McVey) Burke.
Mr. Burke, a life long area resident, worked for the former Crucible Steel Mill as a supervisor for 19 years, was a dispatcher for Murray Trucking and was president of Burke Enterprises. He graduated from East Liverpool High School in 1959, and was a veteran of the US Army, where he was an original member of the inception of the Green Berets, serving from 1959 to 1962. He was president of the Ohio High School Officials Association and officiated basketball for 15 years, football for over 30 years and was a member of American Legion, Post 374.
Mr. Burke is survived by his wife, Linda (VanFossen) Burke, whom he married July 1, 1959; three sons, David M. Burke of Clearwater, Fla., Todd A. Burke and his wife, Ninette of East Liverpool, and Scott E. Burke and his wife, Lisa of North Lima; a daughter, Lynn L. Miller and her husband, Clark of East Liverpool; two brothers, Jack Hile and his wife, Ginger of Lisbon, and Dennis Burke and his wife, Mary Ann of Berea, Ohio; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, a brother, Larry Hile, preceded him in death.
Services will be held at the Calcutta Chapel of the Martin MacLean Altmeyer Funeral Homes on Saturday, Feb. 23, 2013, at 1:30 p.m. with Pastor Merrill Williams of the First Church of the Nazarene, officiating. The Tri State Burial Group will accord military honors.
Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery.
The family will be present to receive friends at the funeral home in Calcutta on Friday, Feb. 21, 2013, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m.
