FAIRPORT HARBOR, Ohio - Funeral services for Kenneth Babb, age 87, a resident of Fairport Harbor, will be noon on Saturday at the Fairport Congregational Church, 308 Third St., Fairport Harbor, with Pastor Tina Green officiating.
Friends will be received from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at the church.
The son of Lorain and Silvia (Walters) Babb was born on Sept. 18, 1925, in Chester.
Mr. Babb passed away on Jan. 30, 2013, at Emeritus at Mentor.
He graduated from Fairmont College with a BS Degree and earned his Masters Degree from University of Pittsburgh. He also attended Kent State where he received his continuing education credits.
He served with the Army-Air Corp as a B-29 Bombadier and was a pilot of smaller planes during World War II.
Ken served the Fairport Harbor School Board in the positions of Teacher of Higher Mathematics from 1958 to 1974 and was Head of the Math Dept. from 1964 to 1974. He was also Assistant Football Coach from 1958 to 1967 (his 1962 team was WRL Champs), Junior High School Coach from 1958 to 1967 and in 1961 his team was undefeated. He served on the Athletic Board from 1959 to 1968. During this period, Ken was instrumental in obtaining the East Street property for the boy's baseball and girl's softball fields. He was also Superintendent from 1976 until his retirement in1984. Kenneth was able to help the School Tax Mills ever passed in the state of Ohio (20 Mill Levy, a 7 Mill Levy, and 20.8 mill Levy). In 1995 the Fairport Harbor Yearbook was dedicated to him.
In his spare time, Mr. Babb was employed as a Realtor with Russell Thomas Realty, Managed the Fairport Harbor Beach for many years and was a part owner of the Harbor Construction Company. He was also a member of the Fairport Men's Civic Club for many years where he was honored as "Man of the Year." He served as the longtime member of the Mardi Gras Committee and was a member of the Fairport Harbor V.F.W. Post 7754. He was also a member of the Fairport Congregational Church.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis (Ford)Babb; a son, Steven (Shelley) Babb of Painesville; a daughter, Nancy (Terry) Vale of Fairport Harbor; stepchildren, Dan and Frank Angelora, Nancy Steele, Patty Perry, Margie Tater, and Kathy Angelora, Lori McKlintic; grandchildren, Elizabeth (Jon) Grafious, Kenneth (Michelle) Vale, Frank and Shawn Leonard, Casey Babb; great-grandchildren, Austin, Dean, Ava, and Wilson; and a sister, Janet Bigley.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Nina (Smith) Babb in 1998; second wife, Charlotte (Rigby) Babb; and his stepfather, Spence Kell.
Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery in Painesville.
