Youngstown - The Lady Potters got off to a good start when sophomore guard Nikayla Edgell bombed a three-pointer just moments into the contest. That early momentum quickly faded, however, as Cardinal Mooney stormed back to record a 53-27 victory on Saturday.

After Edgell's score, the Cardinals would go on an 11-1 run to close the first quarter. Macy Marlowe would connect on a bucket just before the buzzer to give Mooney an 11-4 lead after the opening frame.

"The story of just about every game has been like that," East Liverpool coach Allan Dingey said. "We get behind, and we get frustrated. We just don't have enough patience on offense, and were not reversing the ball."

The Potters closed the gap in the second quarter as they got to within five points at the 2:56 mark when Edgell hit two free throws to make it 18-13. But the Cardinal's would then go on a 6-1 run to go up by 10 points just before intermission.

That's when the Potters' Kiara Cowart would hit a basket inside the paint with only 30 seconds left to make it 24-16 at halftime.

The Potters would come out strong to start the second half as Mary Davis hit a basket at the 7:05 mark of the third quarter, cutting the gap back to five points at 24-19. But unfortunately for the Potters, the combination of the Cardinals' Jaclyn Yankle and Nicole Webber down low, and Jamie DiDominico from outside, would propel the them to a 17-6 run through the rest of the quarter.

The Potters trailed 41-25 after three quarters.

"On defense we tried three different defenses there. We played a lot of man-to-man, went to zone, got in foul trouble, and so were still working (on defense)," Dingey said. "We'll have a little time off on the break, and hopefully we can regroup."

The Cardinals would close the game, and the fourth quarter, by going on a 12-2 run to reach the 53-27 final score. Yankle would add six of her game-high 16 points in the quarter.

"We played decent tonight offensively," Mooney coach Bill Ritter said. "Defensively, we were a little banged up so we sat in a zone and we gave up a few three's to them, but we were able to control the game on the offensive end, and they got a little cold in the second half and we were able to pull away."

The Potters were led by Edgell with 10 points on the afternoon, while Chelsea Possage and Sarah Morrell each contributed five points.

"Two girls got hurt in the junior varsity game, but they were probably the first two I would have brought in," Dingey said. "And then we had one (ill) that is in our rotation so that didn't help, but that's not to make excuses."

The Potters drop to 3-5 on the season, and will not play again until after a holiday break when they host Oak Glen Jan. 2.

Cardinal Mooney also captured the junior varsity contest by a 49-15 score.
