Southern Local 63, Lisbon 36

SALINEVILLE - The Indians had little trouble with the Blue Devils, 63-36, on Friday in both teams season opener.

Southern Local took a 20-12 lead after the opening quarter of play and led by 18 points at the break.

A 20-7 fourth quarter in favor of the Indians put the game away for good.

The area's top returning scorer proved he is out for an encore as Southern Local senior Luke Griffith poured in a game-high 29 points including seven three pointers.

Jared Shilot and Kyler Woodward both finished with 10 points and 11 rebouds apiece, while Dylan Ketchum netted eight points.

J.J. Napierkowski did not score but finished with nine assists.

For Lisbon, freshman Josh Liberati led the way with 16 points, followed by Corey Brammer with nine.

In junior varsity action, Southern Local won, 55-27. Clayton Cunningham paced the Indians with 10 points, followed by Josh Brown and M.J. Williams with seven each. For the Blue Devils, Mike Evans led with 10.

Southern Local will play today at Edison, while Lisbon will host Leetonia on Tuesday.

EAST PALESTINE - The Bulldogs didn't quite have enough in their season opener on Friday falling just short, 49-44, at home against Youngstown Christian.

East Palestine trailed by two points at the end of the first quarter, but rallied to take a three point lead into the half.

"I'm really proud of my guys,"?East Palestine coach Tom Bingham said. "That's a good team we played. They're bigger and quicker than us, but we scrapped and fought the whole way.

"We're young and still a work in progress, but we're only going to get better if we keep playing like that."

Austen Reiser paced the Bulldogs with 15 points and added 14 rebounds and three blocks.

Steve Parker also finished with 15 points, while Zack MayRobb added five.

In reserve action, East Palestine won, 33-30. Colin Reidy led the Bulldogs with seven points.

East Palestine returns to action today at Leetonia.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Champion 64, Beaver Local 33

WARREN - The Beavers got off to a slow start and couldn't catch up falling to Champion, 64-33, on Thursday.

An 18-6 first quarter in favor of Champion proved to be too much to overcome for Beaver Local which fell to 0-2 on the season.

Heading into the final quarter, the Beavers trailed by 33 points.

Champion held a big advantage from the charity stripe going 11-of-22 compared to Beaver Local's 3-of-8.

Sam Bishop was the lone Beaver to score in double digits with 10 points.

Danna Talbott finished with six points, while Tannar Dolhun added five.

Beaver?Local won the junior varsity game, but no score or stats were reported.

The Beavers will look to get in the win column on Monday when they host Wellsville.
