Presidents win team sportsmanship award

WASHINGTON - The Washington & Jefferson football team was selected as the winner of the Presidents' Athletic Conference's Team Sportsmanship Award Sunday night. Southern Local graduate Nathan Melhorn was one of the teaam's four captains this season. Tim McNerney, who died Oct. 4, DeAndre Simmons and Ian Hennessy were the other three captains.

Pasquineli to play in bowl game

NEW WILMINGTON - Salem graduate and Westminster College football player Geno Pasquinelli will play in the 4th Annual D3 Senior Classic Scout Bowl Game Dec. 7. in Salem, VA.

Wellsville winter sports passes on sale

WELLSVILLE - Wellsville High School will be selling winter season passes all week. Tickets will be available today at the girls basketball game, Wednesday from 3-5 p.m. in the high school office, Thursday at the girls basketball game, and Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the high school office and at the boys basketball game. Cost is $45 adult pass, $30 student, $120 family.

Elks Hoop Shoot being held Saturday

CALCUTTA - The free Elks Hoop Shoot free-throw contest will be he held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Calcutta YMCA. It is open to all boys and girls ages 8-13. Prizes available for top performers. Registration will begin at 11a.m. For information contact Chad Prologo at 330-385-2652.

SL Meet the Indians event to be Wednesday

SALINEVILLE - Meet the Indians will be held Nov 28 at 6 p.m. in the high school gym followed by the mandatory state preseason parent meeting. The following winter passes will be available for purchase following the meeting: adult girls basketball $45; adult boys basketball $45; student pass $20; athlete pass $10; high school family $125; junior/senior high family $170; junior high $15; Senior Citizen passes for those living in the district are available at the superintendent's office.

Boxing back at MTR on Saturday

CHESTER - Former world champ Paul "The Pittsburgh Kid" Spadafora (46-0-1, 19KOs) will headline a boxing card at The Harv at Mountaineer Casino, Racetrack & Resort Saturday. The event is presented by 8-time world champ Roy Jones Jr. in association with TNT Promotions. In the co-feature is Youngstown's Jake "The Bull" Giuriceo (16-1-1, 3KOs). Other fighters scheduled include Billy "Hutch" Hutchinson (4-1-D, 2KOs), "Big Chief" Morgan Fitch (7-0, 3KOs), the pro boxing debut of MMA favorite Joey "The Jack Hammer" Holt, of East Liverpool, a special prelude amateur bout with Steubenville's Angelo Magnone and more to be announced. Meet the Bears night being held Thursday

NEW MANCHESTER - The Oak Glen High School/Middle School Meet the Bears night will be held at 7 p.m. on Nov. 29 in the Oak Glen Field House. All team members, coaches and support staff of the high school and middle school boys and girls basketball, wrestling, and cheering teams along with the Oak Glen High School marching band will be introduced. Admission is free.

Track officials meeting being held Feb. 6

AUSTINTOWN - The Greater Youngstwon?Track?Officials Association will hold a mandatory state rules meeting for all coaches and officials at 6 p.m. Feb. 6 and in the Austintown Fitch Auditorium. All coaches and officials must participate in one state rules meeting per year.

Martins Ferry youth b-ball tourney being held

MARTINS FERRY - The Martins Ferry Basketball Parents will once again be sponsoring a youth basketball shootout the weekend of March 1-3, 2013 for 5th and 6th grade boys and girls teams. All teams will be guaranteed three games, with a possibility of a fourth game depending on the number of teams. The entry fee will be $75. Games will be held at Martins Ferry High School with onsite parking and concessions available.
